// OVERVIEW

Join LA Flash as we come back from our short break on Wednesday, October 2oth, for our monthly meeting. We have a few topics going on this month as there is lots to talk about! First we’ll have a quick run down of all the news that has happened over the last couple of months, lots of news in the Flash world! We will have Paul Taylor join us remotely to talk about his lightweight TLF alternative tinyTLF. Powerflasher will join us to talk about their newly released FDT4! And finally, Omar will show how PlugrMan can help you develop AMF APIs for all types of Flash front ends. And, of course, we can’t forget Adobe MAX 2010! We will talk a bit about what is going down at MAX. Thanks to Powerflasher we will be raffling an FDT Pure license!

// Meeting Agenda

  • Explore and Experience FDT4 with the Powerflasher Team
  • tinyTLF with Paul Taylor
  • Developing and Debugging AMF with PlugrMan
  • Raffle, Networking

// Explore and Experience FDT4 with the Powerflasher Team

Powerflasher has just released FDT4 and with it has introduced new features that make coding both easier and more fun. For this presentation, we’ll show off some of those new features as well as show some ways of incorporating PlugrMan and tinyTLF into your workflow.

// tinyTLF with Paul Taylor

In this short preso, Paul Taylor will hit the high points of tinytlf, his smallish TLF alternative. tinytlf is built on top of the newest low-level API, the Flash Text Engine. tinytlf renders real HTML and CSS and provides a robust API for decoration, interaction, and text layout.

// Developing and Debugging AMF with PlugrMan

Omar Gonzalez will show how PlugrMan can help easily debug and develop AMF APIs, as well as show off its support for strongly-typed APIs, code generation and automated remote method unit testing features.

// RAFFLE, NETWORKING, AND BEER!

As always, we will host a raffle and networking session. Make sure you can stay until the end, as we will be raffling an FDT4 Pure License and some other stuff!

5 Things to Improve Flash Catalyst

September 10, 2010 in Blog by Omar

I’ve been meaning to post some of these points for a while after having finished a few projects where skin implementation was done using Flash Catalyst.  While the Flex Spark architecture along with Flash Catalyst has really improved designer to developer workflows there are still things that are left to be desired from Flash Catalyst.  I must point out though that despite these flaws/annoyances Flash Catalyst has had mostly positive affects on development for our team at Almer/Blank.  So without further adieu, here are five things I think would really improve Flash Catalyst. Android Flash Player OTA Updates

August 23, 2010 in Blog by Omar

During last week Adobe started to update Flash Player plugin installs on Android phones automatically over the air, that is, without the phone’s owner specifically clicking on the Update button.

A couple of people asked me how to set up the phone to allow the updates, as it is not on by default and the phone’s owner must allow the updates to happen automatically. First open the Market application and tap on the Downloads menu. In this menu, find the Flash Player listing.

Market Downloads

Once you find the listing tap on it to see the details for Flash Player.  At the top there is a checkbox for Allow Automatic updating.  If you turn this on your phone will automatically update Flash Player when it finds a new version available.

August 17, 2010 in Events by Harald

FITC San Francisco Image

As mentioned in our last meeting, LAFLash’s partner Flash in the Can ( FITC ) is having their next event in San Francisco very soon. The event will take place from August 17th to 19th. As usual for FITC events, there is an amazing speaker line up including Erik Natzke, Colin Moock, Grant Skinner, and LAFlash founder and former user group manager R Blank.

Check out the official FITC website for more information on the event. Tickets are still available and LAFlash will raffle away two of them. To receive more details of the benefits as a LAFlash member regarding the tix, please come to our next meeting. Please watch out for our email newsletter for more information of the upcoming June meeting.

I hope to see many members at the event. After all, FITC will not take place in L.A. this year. So, it’s not going to get any closer than San Francisco!

ExpressInstall Crash on 10.0.45.2

June 17, 2010 in Blog, Code by Omar

I have used express install on many projects without having many issues, but today I ran into an issue that was either making the express install window not display at all, or when it did display, it would not allow the user to click on the OK or Cancel buttons.

The issue seems to be isolated to Flash Player 10.0.45.2, on all browsers, while trying to update to 10.1.53. I narrowed down the issue to setting the wmode parameter to either “direct” or “gpu” for hardware acceleration while using express install.

I’ve logged this in the Adobe JIRA bug base. But I wanted to post my workaround here if anyone is experiencing this issue and is looking for a resolution. To get around the bug I simply wrapped the parameter in an if clause. Hope this is helpful to someone!

01 <script type="text/javascript">
02         <!-- For version detection, set to min. required Flash Player version, or 0 (or 0.0.0), for no version detection. -->
03         var swfVersionStr = "10.1.53";
04         <!-- To use express install, set to playerProductInstall.swf, otherwise the empty string. -->
05         var xiSwfUrlStr = "playerProductInstall.swf";
06         var flashvars = {...};
07         var params = {};
08         params.quality = "high";
09         params.bgcolor = "#000000";
10         params.allowscriptaccess = "sameDomain";
11         params.allowfullscreen = "true";
12         // Only set wmode if the right Flash Player is present.
13         if (swfobject.hasFlashPlayerVersion(swfVersionStr))
14         {
